City launches Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability 2023

Today the City of Cape Town’s Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis launched the 2023 edition of the Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability. The publication showcases projects undertaken to bring about a more caring, inclusive, prosperous, united, respectful, safe and free city. The Mayor’s Portfolio also serves as a call to citizens to actively partner with the City in co-creating a sustainable Cape Town.
The Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability showcases how the City is mainstreaming sustainability thinking in project planning and implementation based on a long-term approach to development.
‘In recent years, Cape Town has confronted severe shocks that have had far-reaching implications for our city. This includes the water crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, a national energy supply crisis and ongoing load-shedding, inland water quality challenges, and increasing climate change risks. At the same time, rapid urbanisation is placing increasing pressure on the city’s land, natural assets and resources. Yet, Capetonians have repeatedly demonstrated resilience and innovation when confronted by these shocks. This inspires confidence that we can build a sustainable city, and indeed a city of hope, in line with our long-term vision.
‘The Urban Sustainability Portfolio is an opportunity to celebrate both the City’s project managers and the many Capetonians who are co-creating sustainable projects together with us, so that our city can be an even better place in the future,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
This edition of the Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability profiles 30 new projects contributing to building a sustainable city.
Featured projects for 2023 are grouped into four sections:
Vision Portfolio: Achieving substantial outcomes through innovative and visionary planning.
• Floating solar photovoltaic (PV) pilot,
• Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) programme,
• One contact centre for non-emergencies (OCCNE), and
• Potsdam sustainability campus.
Social Portfolio: Strong social objectives and extensive community involvement
• Kommetjie Road and Sir Lowry’s Pass fire stations
• Paint City Safe Space
• Substance abuse projects
• Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and Athlone vaccination centres of hope (Covid-19),
• Cultural mapping and planning programme,
• Differential Model of Care med (DMOCmed) Area Central,
• Food systems pilot programme
• Sustainable development goals (SDG) voluntary local review (VLR) 2021, and
• Women and girls resilience programme.
Economic Portfolio: Stimulating economic activity and generating growth
• #YouthStartCT entrepreneurial challenge,
• Building energy management,
• Cape Town Market,
• City of Cape Town Vulnerability Viewer,
• SAP CRM service request enhancement,
• Service delivery turnaround project,
• South African Renewable Energy Business Incubator (SAREBI),
• W3 bus rapid transit (BRT) road construction as part of integrated rapid transit (IRT) phase 2A, and
• Welmoed cemetery Covid-19 phase 6 and Atlantis cemetery Covid-19 phase 4.
Ecological Portfolio: Meeting current and future generational needs sustainably within our biosphere
• Atlantis alien vegetation removal,
• Belhar Gardens rental estate,
• Bellville catalytic-precinct zerowaste initiative,
• Electric vehicle (EV) charging station pilot,
• Experiential education garden,
• Helderberg environmental education centre,
• My Clean Green Home, and
• University of Cape Town African Centre for Cities (ACC)-City of Cape Town knowledge partnership.
The Mayor’s Portfolio of Urban Sustainability programme is continuously exploring new ways for mainstreaming sustainability. These include knowledge partnerships, mentorship programmes, and supporting and expanding the existing community of practice.
